Most pet owners don't realize how quickly extreme heat can become life-threatening. Heatstroke in dogs can develop — and turn fatal — in under an hour if a pet has no access to shade, water, or rest, according to PetMD.
Once a dog's body temperature climbs past 104°F, the effects go far beyond simple discomfort. Neurological symptoms start appearing, including disorientation and seizures, and multiple organs can begin to fail at once. That's because overheating directly damages body tissue, triggering inflammation that cuts off healthy blood flow to vital organs. Every system in the body can be affected.
This is why veterinarians treat heatstroke as a true medical emergency, not something to "wait and see" about. The earlier it's caught, the better the outcome.
Warning Signs of Dehydration & Heat Stress You Shouldn't Ignore
Heat stress and dehydration feed into each other. Pets that are hot and panting or breathing rapidly lose fluids much faster than pets in a cool environment — and that dehydration, in turn, speeds up the progression toward heatstroke, according to AAHA. Constant access to water in hot weather isn't optional; it's essential.
So what should you actually watch for? According to veterinary sources, the key warning signs include:

In more severe cases, pets may show confusion, collapse, or even seizures.
Cats are especially good at masking discomfort. Instead of obvious distress, look for subtler shifts — changes in energy level, grooming habits, or litter box use. By the time a cat looks visibly unwell, the problem may already be advanced.
Who's Most at Risk — and What Vets Recommend You Do
Not every pet faces the same level of risk. Puppies, kittens, senior pets, and animals with heart, kidney, diabetes, or airway conditions are more likely to deteriorate quickly once heat stress sets in.
The risk isn't shrinking, either — as climate change fuels more frequent and more intense heat waves, veterinarians report a rising number of heatstroke, dehydration, and paw-burn cases nationwide. A large clinical study of over 850 heat-related illness cases in dogs found that respiratory changes and lethargy were the most common early symptoms, while neurological signs and internal bleeding carried the highest risk of death. Time matters: a delay of more than 90 minutes between heat exposure and treatment significantly lowers the chances of recovery.
The first-aid rule vets agree on is simple: cool first, transport second. Start cooling your pet down immediately — before you even head to the vet — because every minute of delay increases the risk.

It doesn't work on cats or humans. Cats avoid it completely, and I tried it myself, but it heats up immediately and doesn't cool anything down.

They sent me a fake!!! The mat does not have any cooling properties. It is made from regular synthetic materials. There are no tags indicating the composition or label on it. The money was wasted... This cloth can't even be used to wipe away dust now... I didn't communicate with the seller. I opened a dispute and the Ali team asked me to send a photo of the label with the product's ingredients. What was I supposed to send them if there are no tags on this rug at all!!! I attached photos and videos to the dispute showing that there are no identification marks on this rag, and I was denied a refund due to lack of evidence. k. I did not provide the composition of the product. . . I wonder if I needed to write and sew the tag myself, or where can I get one? ? ? These guys are trash... Bravo!! !
Delivery is very fast. Packaging is good. Quality is excellent. The mat has a slight cooling effect; you can put it in the refrigerator for a few minutes, and the effect is a bit better. My puppy likes it.
